Eye Candy Pansies

pan-fizzy-lemonberryWe put a lot of thought into the pansies we plant in our 306 market baskets. This pot & tray package is unlike the other ones we grow—it is specifically designed for impulse purchases. Visually, the handles are little flags that say, “Take me home.” The trays sell well in high-traffic areas. Their smaller size encourages experimentation in a way that larger flats don’t. Since 306s are so visible, we grow our best selection of unique, special and distinctive pansies in this program.

Fancy pansies also make sense right now. We are in that awkward warm/cool cycle of early spring. Although we are headed into warmer weather, customers still remember the cold and chill from last week. Pansies are safe to buy, and fancy pansies are a step up from the common supermarket varieties.

Now let’s take a walking tour of the most interesting material we have on hand today:

MATRIX® SUNRISE

This tinted pansy has a very sophisticated color scheme. Look closely and you will see that the colors flow smoothly from soft yellow at the center to warm apple red at the edges—the colors sort of seep into each other. The intensity of the colors also shifts from bloom to bloom, adding a great deal of charm to the plantings.

FIZZY LEMONBERRY

Our best ruffled pansy has bright, sharp colors that streak into each other. The colors are basic yellow and purple with a dark face, but the curled petals and strong streaks in the colors make it a stand out. This is a popular designer pansy that we offer in 1203 trays as well.

PANOLA SILHOUETTE MIX

Blended from pansies and violas, the Silhouettes feature pastel blooms in a number of shades. Combine that with the color coverage that violas provide and you’ve got a great mix.

DELTA FIRE

The color is unstable in the plant, which is the foundation of its charm. Some blooms are full red, some blooms are almost all yellow, but most blooms are various mixes and tints of the two. Planted en masse, the effect is like a fire in the fireplace with the colors flickering around the garden.

DYNAMITE LAVENDER

This is an unstable lavender, and we mean that in a good way. Blooms are mostly pastel lavender, but also include various shades of very light to almost light lavender. Occasionally, a dark lavender pops in for contrast. As we have mentioned before, we consider these color-jumpers to be a lot of fun.

DELTA WATERCOLOR MIX

Light shades of white, pink and lavender melt together on the petals. It’s definitely within the pastel color range, but the colors are stable within the plant.

MATRIX® PRIMROSE

A popular color trend now is light yellow, such as butter yellow and cream yellow. Primrose nails the light cream color for pansies with an incredibly clear face and a very big open bloom.
