Baskets for Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is on the horizon—chances are you’ll need to replenish your basket selection after all the nice weather we’ve been having lately. We still have plenty of 10-inch hanging baskets left to give your inventory a boost—here’s a rundown of what looks especially fine:
‘Superbells® Sweet Tart’
Calibrachoa is our signature Mother’s Day crop—we have a wide variety of solid colors and mixes. ‘Superbells® Sweet Tart’ is a nice selection for Mother’s Day—the pretty pink flowers have bright yellow throats. Another striking choice is ‘Indigo Sunshine’, a bold mix of blue and yellow blooms.
‘Dragon Wing® Red’
Winged begonias are in good color—they provide a fancier look than traditional begonias, especially the tropical-looking ‘Bossa Nova Orange’. We also have ‘Dragon Wing® Red’, ‘Dragon Wing® Pink’, and a mix.
‘SunPatiens® Compact Lilac’
It’s important to offer New Guinea impatiens and impatiens hybrids as downy mildew-safe alternatives. ‘Bounce Cherry’ and ‘Bounce Pink Flame’ are good choices for hybrids, as well as ‘SunPatiens® Compact Lilac’. We have a nice assortment of New Guineas, including ‘Sonic® Magic Pink’ and selections from the Infinity® and Celebration series.
Once you’ve got the standards ticked off your list, make the holiday interesting by filling in the gaps with some of our other uncommon varieties:
‘Magic Carpet™’
Fuchsia is looking prime. It’s not exactly out-of-the-ordinary but we like the exotic effect of its blooms-emerging-from-blooms appearance. For an explosion of small yellow flowers on a mound of green foliage go with Mecardonia ‘Magic Carpet™’. Torenia is a nice calibrachoa alternative for shade—we recommend ‘Catalina® Gilded Grape’ (yellow and violet) and ‘Summer Wave® Large Blue’.
Scaevola ‘Whirlwind® Blue’
Scaevola ‘Whirlwind® Blue’ is an eye-catcher with its fan-shaped flowers, as is the funky, fuzzy Chenille ‘Firetail’. Succulent portulaca, or moss rose, in Hot Sun (red and yellow) or Summer Sherbet (orange and yellow) is handy for adding much needed bright color to hot, dry spots. It’s also stunning in straight-up orange.
‘Tumbling Tom Red’
A no-nonsense mom might prefer a more utilitarian gift, so it’s smart to stock some trendy edibles in hanging baskets. Our Strawberry ‘Frisan’ is probably the most ornamental variety, with deep pink flowers—and a constant supply of sweet red berries. ‘Tumbling Tom Red’ is a handsome tomato to keep within snacking distance around the patio or deck—and most of the no-nonsense moms we know prefer healthy snacks.
‘Marguerite’
Foliage baskets are always in demand. This year we have a striking ipomoea mix: the dark ‘Ace of Spades’ with bright green ‘Marguerite’ for contrast. Also look for our spider plant, ‘Sassy’ fern, and three types of wandering Jew—they’re suitable as houseplants.
‘Surfinia® Pink Veined’
Petunias are tried-and-true so be sure to order some. ‘Wave™ Blue’ is a spreading variety that’s very effective in hanging baskets. Some standout vegetative selections are ‘Cascadia™ Indian Summer’, ‘Surfinia® Pink Veined’, and ‘Supertunia® Raspberry Blast’.
