Variegated Algerian Ivy
Algerian ivy—little care with great results
It’s easy to take some plants for granted; they grow like crazy, do their job under challenging conditions, and somehow manage to always look attractive. We pay them little to no attention—because they don’t require any—and accept all the glory for the beautiful designs we create with them. This is one of those plants.
Variegated Algerian ivy makes an eye-catching display
When you’re looking for a tough, fast-spreading evergreen groundcover ivy is the way to go and this version is a true eye-catcher. Notice the dramatic variegation on the leaves—some have almost as much white as they do glossy green. Look closely and you’ll see that the stems are deep red, if the funky variegation didn’t already provide enough interest.
Thrives in any soil
As we mentioned, Algerian ivy is a tough character: it grows easily—and vigorously—in most types of soil, even the poorest ones, and thrives in heavy shade or full sun. Neglect is not a problem—it’s heat and drought tolerant and stands up to foot traffic as well. As long as the temperature stays above 15°F you can expect to see fresh new leaves in spring.
Ivy is a go-to plant for a number of design situations so it’s essential to keep some in your toolbox. Planted en masse it’s a popular choice for covering steep slopes in the landscape and is often used to deter erosion. We find that with its decorative leaves and colorful stems this variety looks particularly beautiful trailing out of hanging baskets.
Let it climb or cascade
Classically we see ivy climbing up trellises and cascading over walls; it can actually help cool the surface of a building during the high heat of summertime, while adding character to a façade at the same time. Trim it back when necessary, or tie it in to train it to climb where you want it to go.
Plant en masse to fill in any area
This pretty variegated ivy is available in the 4.5-inch pot.
