White in a Different Light
Petunia ‘Supertunia Mini Blue-Veined’
Neutral colors are important to keep in mind when planning a design. White, along with black and gray, can be used as a backdrop or as a handy dividing line between multiple color schemes or combinations. When used in the background, clear white gives prominence to neighboring colors and makes them appear darker.
Gaura ‘Belleza White’
When we need to brighten a dark, shady area of the landscape we often turn to white flowers, or foliage with white variegation. It’s surprising how effective this can be, and as dusk sets in you’ll notice another unique quality of many pale, pearly blooms: they practically glow as the light gets low.
Lantana ‘Landmark White’
Occasionally we enjoy the challenge of creating a monochromatic display, and white is an elegant go-to for this. Designing with just one color takes the focus off our usual rainbow palette of blooms and puts it squarely on shapes and textures—forcing us to think outside the box.
