Plant More Kale
Incredibly dark ‘Scarlet Bor’
Wednesday is National Kale Day—yes, it has a day. Kale is a super food after all, and from a landscaping point of view it’s often an eye-catching ornamental. ‘Scarlet Bor’ is our case in point, one of the most beautiful kales you’ll find. It’s also one of the most delicious so this plant truly is worth celebrating.
It’s a natural thriller
There’s a lot going on here. Frilly leaves are deepest red-purple and even the stems and veins are dark red for all-over texture and color. Plus ‘Scarlet Bor’ grows about 18 inches tall so it’s stately compared to many other kales. This is a thriller—set it in the center of a big old urn surrounded by lower-growing ‘Nagoya Rose’ and some colorful Matrix pansies.
Stays crisp when picked—and stems are tender
Now, when reading reviews of this plant online the most frequently repeated word is yum. Kale fans like the way the leaves stay crisp when picked, and the fact that even the stems are tender. ‘Scarlet Bor’ also presents well on the plate, adding a bit of drama to the usual pre-meal photo sharing.
Curly leaves are tightly bunched
Of course, it’s convenient having a source of fresh, healthy greens in the colder weather when there are slim pickings in the vegetable garden. ‘Scarlet Bor’ is known for its winter hardiness, standing up to the cold and surviving through severe weather such as high winds, rain and even hail. Those curly leaves stay tightly bunched all season, too, even through frosts and heavy snow.
Celebrate National Kale Day!
We’ve paired this incredibly dark kale with bright yellow violas for contrast and it worked nicely because the violas lasted long into the winter as well. Remember: a hedge of ‘Scarlet Bor’ makes a compelling backdrop for festive kale-themed holiday displays.
Please celebrate responsibly.
This selection is available in the 8-inch pot. Look for our entire line of ornamental kale in the Availability section of our web site.
