Back-to-School is popping up here and there so that means the late summer/early fall gardening rush is about to begin.  Customers will need color as they tie up loose ends in the yard before the hectic pace of another school year swings into gear. Autumn sales always improve when you offer other choices along with your Mums so replenish your inventory with fresh material that’s shipping this week:

These classic Ornamentals come into their own with the heat of August and September. Their curious little fruits add a lot of zing to designs, and they even dry well to become October décor. We have the multicolored, mild-tasting ‘Chilly Chili’ and glossy, dramatic ‘Black Pearl’ available in the 8-inch pot.

Filling in and spilling out of containers and beds, we have three core colors of sweet potato vine that enhance fall décor: light green, red, and black. They grow fast and provide an effective complement to the main attraction in either beds or containers. By themselves they form a little waterfall of color. ‘Ace of Spades’, ‘Bright Ideas Rusty Red’, and chartreuse ‘Marguerite’ are shipping in the 8-inch pot. ‘Marguerite’ comes in the 4.5-inch pot as well.

ASTERS WITH THE MUMS

We have Asters to complement the early Mums we’re selling to give you a jump on fall decorating projects. It’s important to offer Asters because they come in certain shades that are hard to find in Mums. For early Mums we recommend the Yellow, Pink, and White varieties from the Staviski series, available in the 8-inch pot. ‘Days Blue’ and ‘Magic Purple’ Aster come in the 4.5-inch pot size.

To add height behind shorter flowering annuals Angelonia is one of our favorites. It also makes a beautiful thriller in containers. We like to say that this cool purple-blue is like a classic pair of jeans—it goes with everything. ‘Angelface Blue’ is shipping in the 4.5-inch pot.

Eye-catching double flowers of the Profusion series come in bright tones that are both sunny for summer and warm for autumn. Lush green mounds of foliage make the blooms stand out and quickly fill a space. ‘Profusion Double Fire’ and ‘Profusion Double Golden’ are available in the 4.5-inch pot.
