Hot and Savory Peppers
Add depth and earthiness to recipes—or a fiery kick
A few weeks back we talked about sweet peppers, but with Cinco de Mayo on the horizon some spicier varieties are in order. Our large selection of hot peppers ranges from fiery specimens to a number of tasty varieties that fall somewhere between sweet and hot—we like to refer to them as savory. They add depth and earthiness to a recipe without blowing steam through your ears and setting off the fire alarm, although they do have a little bit of a kick. Here are some new selections in both of these hot pepper categories:
Begonia Mixes
Durable, dependable color of 'Super Olympia'—the importance is obvious here
Add another billable service to the boxwoods and lawns in your landscape business menu by offering simple color gardens to clients—and start with begonias. These plants are purpose-built to solve many of the problems found in the commercial world because they’re tough, consistent, and dependable. Begonias bloom through the season, stay neat and tidy, and tolerate rough handling, plus they aren’t fussy about soil, water, or light.
Tomato Roundup for 2017
Heirlooms: rich, old-time flavor and dramatic presentation
Time to talk about tomatoes, the most important vegetable crop in the summer garden. You know, the tomato is actually a fruit—but that’s a conversation for a different day. It’s essential to offer several different types of tomatoes, and we have quite a diverse selection. I’d like to introduce you to a few of the interesting new varieties we have for the 2017 season.
Rex Begonia Jurassic Series
‘Jurassic Green Streak’
With large leaves in bold patterns, interesting shapes, and striking colors Rex begonias hardly seem like begonias at all—they’re all about the foliage with nary a bloom in sight. These are plants we keep in the design tool box as vibrant, low-maintenance options for deep shade.
Our new selections from the Jurassic series are truly unique, with unusual veining and puckering that creates an abundance of texture in addition to the wild configurations of color. We like to use one as a starting point and build a design around its intriguing palette:
‘Green Streak’ is elegant and edgy—silver-green leaves have a rosy-pink blush and are veined in dark green.
Impatiens Double Fiesta Series
‘Fiesta Appleblossom’
Over the years we’ve gotten accustomed to seeing Impatiens walleriana in window boxes and borders—it’s a landscape standard for lightening shade areas. Often the bright flower colors are used to create bold patterns and eye-catching stripes in the border. Now, flashy has its place, but some situations call for a more understated approach.
